Unreachable Goal? Don’t Give Up. Sit With It.

Time To Read: 3 mins

When some project feels too big, do you stall, drop it, or take a step forward?

When the vision of what you want is so far off in the distance from where you stand today, you can feel like you’ll never get there. It can be difficult to find the motivation and energy to start. There is too much to learn and get right, and it seems too easy to fail and disappoint.

You may feel like you don’t have enough will to power through or the right stuff to get to where you want to go.

Don’t beat yourself up. Definitely don’t give up.

Sit with it. Bide your time.

Let that vision stand over there. Let it be. Dress it up. And ask yourself,

How badly do I want that?

Reflect on this question. Check in with yourself periodically and gauge how you respond.

Try not to despair if you find this questioning to last for days, months, or even years, punctuated by great enthusiasm, uncertainty, and then quiet. It’s okay.

Sitting in the muck. During this period of what I call “sitting in the muck,” you might find your self-talk sounding something like this.

  • Others can do that, but I can’t.
  • Others haven’t done it, why do I think I can?
  • Nobody’s thought of this, it can’t be a good idea.
  • Others have tried and failed for good reason.
  • This is a trick. I may think I want to do this, but it’s because I’m avoiding something more important.
  • Why the heck do I want to do this?
  • Where did this stupid idea even come from?

These doubts can immobilize you.

Until you can’t shake the constant nagging that this vision is worthy of your attention.

Until you have run out of excuses for not pursuing that dream.

Until you start kicking yourself for not believing in your ideas.

Until you can’t stand sitting on it any longer … and you hear yourself shout,

Who cares where this stupid idea came from? I still want it!

You have stewed long enough.

That’s when you are able to turn the corner and look for the path of least resistance.

Figure out one thing to do to advance yourself on that path, something that can engage your attention, but isn’t too difficult.

Think simple. Doable.

Take that step and tell yourself that the next one will be easier.

It will be.

As you take another step and another, you will start to feel your body leaning forward.

You’re gaining momentum.

Suddenly and unexpectedly doors are opening, opportunities are coming your way, helpers are appearing from out of nowhere. The universe seems to have taken notice.

You’re gaining confidence and motivation.

Your body is poised for the next challenge.

And, like a locomotive picking up steam, you’re moving toward that dream of yours, going full speed ahead and never looking back.

I want to narrow the distance between where I’m standing today and where I want to be. I seek clarity to bring me in closer reach of my vision. And, I wish that for you.

What might your dream be? Can you give yourself permission to sit with it? When you feel ready what step can you take to jumpstart momentum?
