Hello! Welcome to The Unblocked Life

This site calls out to entrepreneurs, consultants, creatives, scientists, engineers, writers, administrators, second-careerists, and the stay-at-home moms and dads who might have a nagging sense that you aren’t living up to your own potential. There’s that something you haven’t done.

Even if we are satisfied with what we have accomplished so far, with our careers, our family, our community.

Even if we feel grateful for the home we live in, the food we buy and the dinners we serve to our family, and the friendships that have sustained us.

Even if our lives are more than crowded with responsibility, with the things we have to get done.

We know deep inside that there’s a must do that we haven’t yet carved out time for, thought through how to, or even admitted to ourselves its importance.

What are we waiting for? What is this must do for you? When all is quiet what nags at you?

Here at The Unblocked Life we create the space to help prepare you for this journey to get that must do done—to create the life you wish to lead. Our workshops and resources offer inspiration, fresh ideas, and strategies to get you started.

A Few Thoughts

On Hospitality. I am a firm believer in hospitality. What I mean by hospitality is creating an environment where my guests feel comfortable in their own skin enough to relax and enjoy themselves.

For the workshops that I design and lead, this means that I aim to create an environment where I help you let down your guard and lower your resistance to what the workshop is intended to accomplish—increasing your self-awareness and spurring you to take action.

Or, another way to think of my approach is, I try to slow down your left brain and excite your right brain so that your whole brain is engaged to do the deep dive kind of thinking necessary to help you figure out what your personal journey is for you at this point in time.

On Leadership. I agree that we all can lead without being formally tagged as “the leader.” The thing that I focus on is leading ourselves in order to, or before we can effectively, lead others on a project, in a startup, or to fulfill an important government agency mission.

Think about that for a moment.

To attract followers to take our lead we must show them that we are living a life that is in balance, that is genuine, and that is meaningful.

We are the walking models of what we preach.

So I say, “by focusing in, we can lead out.” I call it,

“Begin With Ourselves in Mind™” and “Be the Leader You Wish to See™”.

By getting our own lives in alignment, by leading ourselves on our own personal leadership journey, we can become more effective leaders elsewhere—the kind that others wish to follow.

About Us

Hi. I’m Connie K. N. Chang and the Founder of The Unblocked Life™.

I founded this business and created this site to shine a light on the importance of personal leadership. The Unblocked Life is a love of mine.

There’s so much attention on how to lead—people, projects, businesses, where our eyes are seeing out and our minds are on how we can move others. We often forget that leadership starts with ourselves first.

When our management tactics are stale, when the project team that we lead is fraught with anxiety over a work deadline, or when we know we should be publishing more but aren’t, maybe instead of pushing forward we might consider just stopping to take a few deep breaths and listen for what is going on inside ourselves.

The choices I’ve made in my career and what I’m interested in goes back to this idea of personal leadership.

I gravitate toward books that help me understand the meaning of a well-lived life, how fitness and health affect emotional well-being, how habits play a powerful role in our daily lives, the importance of grit and the growth mindset to achieving success, and the way that entrepreneurs and designers go about their work.

I gravitate toward being of service. I care about the people in my community. How are my friends doing? Can I help in some way? Who in my network can lend a hand?

For most of my adult working life I have played a supporting role, albeit an important one, in helping scientists and engineers fund their research ideas, in helping the government evaluate the economic impact of research funding, and in helping new research teams manage their projects or start up their research centers. I feel good when I am of service. I enjoy helping others uncover their dreams and seeing them succeed.

I designed Begin With Ourselves in Mind™: An Unblocked.Life™ Workshop to serve as the trigger to excite you to make the change you wish and lead yourself on a journey to your must do.

Some say that I have an intuitive sense of the thread that can unravel a knotty situation or the spark that can breathe life into a stale project, that I have honed that ability in my advisory and consultancy work with government agencies, universities, and companies. That sounds about right.

I love my work and the people I work with. The theme that consistently runs through my professional life is: Be The Leader You Wish To See™.

I hope you find inspiration here at The Unblocked Life.

What’s Your Zeitgeber? Mine Is The Oxalis Triangularis Plant.

What cues you into your self-awareness? For me, it’s a particular plant. Plants that seem to follow a circadian rhythm of waking and resting are objects of curiosity for me. For years now I’ve marveled at my oxalis triangularis plant—otherwise known as the purple shamrock or love plant. The name, love plant, is fitting. …
